New Crafted Greetings for your 2011 Holiday play...

A few years back I had an idea of creating Mini Note Cards. Great little 2.5 to 3 inch cards that would serve as great note cards and tags for gifts and gift bags. They would be sold in sets, inexpensive and come with envelopes depending on design...

For my Grand re-Opening/Comeback I started to play around with a few ideas I would like to share:

My first design is the Holiday NutCracker

These little NutCrackers sit on white card stock of 2.5 inches all around and will have red and green inked edges, stamped with non-toxic ink a little Holiday cheer with the inside remaining blank so you can scribble a short Holiday message. These Mini Note Cards will come with a mix of red and white envelopes so you can give as Note Cards or attached to a gift or stuff into a gift bag...

This is a set of 4 Mini Cards for $3...

My second design: SnowFlake Penguins

this is a similar design I did last year with blue ink edges and a ribbon for tying/attaching to gifts...

This years design will follow that pattern but have a mix of red and green inked edges,

I have been through the rain and storm over the past year and just now finding my way home...
but I have remained busy growing and establishing myself as a business man in NYC.

I have lately started writing poetry and looking to publish my first book sometime in 2012, I was hoping for February 2012, but life has many hurdles to jump over.

Mother's Day is right around the corner...

This year I plan to romance my fiancee'. A little slow music (some of her fav tunes) while I feed her crab and lobster and maybe a little wine-gotta let her get her buzz on (lol). Then for the evening I will run her a bath with all the trimmings-bubbles, candles and a little music. After all that is said and done I will give her that back rub she been asking for the last 2 weeks (lol).

Mother's are very special and none of would be here today or have any part of our legacy to carry on our name(s) if it weren't for them, so lets celebrate Mother's all around the world by being the best to the one next to you...

A new start...My new Business Plan!

I have been away from my craft for a while and have to decided to start over from scratch. One of the first things I did was re-do my business plan. After being in business for 4 years and only selling hand made cards for 2, I wanted to re-establish myself and my business so ensure the next 3 years are better then today...

So here is the start of my business plan, tell me what you think:

Handcrafted by LaMar is a start up company that begun operations in June 2006 under the name DAJaHSI Greetings. It has established a presence on Etsy.com, an online selling venue for handmade arts and crafts as well as through local craft fairs and shows. Our consumer base, are women, who purchase approximately 90% of all greeting cards bought today. For this reason Handcrafted by LaMar will target small local boutiques, specialty stores, salons, florist and gift shops, craft shows and fairs in the New York area as well as along the east coast. At this time, we are continuing to build our online presence and seek placement in several boutiques within the immediate area.

Executive Summary
In 2006 DAJaHSI Greetings, founded by La-Mar D Lynch, sought to use poetry and art to comfort, inspire, celebrate and communicate to millions through social expressions (greeting cards). The company then began to acquire images from freelance artist nationwide for mass print and resale. After further research into the greeting card industry, it found it better to create cards that would stand apart from the traditional computer generated mass printed greeting card(s). The company immediately shifted its focus to creating and designing cards that are handcrafted/hand made, personalized, and unique, changing its name from DAJaHSI Greetings to Handcrafted by LaMar.
The company offers a collection of hand made greeting cards for every occasion. Handcrafted by LaMar is dedicated to developing social expressions that comfort, inspire, celebrate and communicate a range of emotions to millions of people. Our objective is to create handcrafted greeting cards with great care, quality, originality, and uniqueness for every occasion. We are committed to creating an exceptional product, as it is a reflection of our name and philosophy.
The greeting card industry has a constant and continual need for alternative designs, being one of our culture’s traditional tool of communication and expression, touching the lives of millions everyday. The message, greeting and/or versus causes the consumer to buy the card, but it’s the design of that attracts them. 90% of card buyers are female and with American households receiving approximately, 30-35 cards per year. Despite the constant use of internet, sending emails, text messaging and e-cards, the majority still prefer the old-fashioned handwritten letter or card to truly make someone feel special.

Our objective is to create handcrafted greeting cards with great care, quality, originality, and uniqueness for every occasion.

Legal Title and Legal Business Form
In 2006, La-Mar D Lynch started DAJaHSI Greetings and obtained an EIN number and filed as a sole proprietorship in accordance with government rules and regulations of operating a business in the state of New York. After further research of the greeting card industry and the decision to change direction, we plan to change the current business structure to a limited liability company (LLC), as Handcrafted by LaMar.

Management Summary
Handcrafted by LaMar’s management team currently consists of a CEO/Owner, designer and a Director of Product Design. The CEO/Owner currently oversees all the day to day affairs-research, product development and design, advertising and financial analysis.

CEO/Owner, La-Mar D. Lynch, a 32-year-old father of four wonderful children currently lives in Nyack, NY and works as a Customer Service Representative II (CSRII) for REGUS Management, an executive suites company. He is a current member of the Policy Council of Head Start of Nyack, NY, and an active member of the NewNew York Street team (a group of crafters from NY and CT). La-Mar has always been creative, at a young age drawing and creating superhero characters and writing poetry. Scrapbooking and card making became a part of his life in the past four years when he decided he wanted more out of life not just for himself but for his children by using his talent(s) to start a business. The first card he created was hand drawn image of a man and woman about to kiss with a heart background, on white 8.5” by 5.5” (folded) cardstock that was hand painted and had rhinestone embellishments. He then began to create hand made cards for family and friends to enjoy and with their support
and encouragement he knew it was time to embark upon a new adventure. He started his business in 2006 naming it after his children, using the first two letters of their name - Darius, Jahsique and Siarra - DAJaHSI Greetings. He later joined Etsy.com, an online selling venue for handmade arts and crafts, did local craft shows and fairs in the Hudson Valley and New York City areas and became a member of various social networks of crafters and small business owners.

The day-to-day affairs are managed by La-Mar, who has management experience as a previous Jackie Rogers, a couture-clothing designer, as a Production Manager and through his current employment with REGUS Management Group as a Customer Service Representative/ Operations Manager Trainee. His day to day includes shipping and receiving, updating the company website and blog, processing orders, following up on invoices, inquiries and client request, following leads, advertising, marketing, design and customer satisfaction.
There are currently only two members of Handcrafted by LaMar’s management team. Ownership of the business is not evenly distributed throughout the team.

CEO/Owner, La-Mar D. Lynch will maintain 90% ownership of the business, as he is responsible for the funding and growth of the business. The day–to–day activities of the business are overseen by La-Mar, which include marinating inventory, locating retailers and distributors within the New York State area and along the East Coast, the management of the finances, and sales, advertising and basic operation of the business. Being the only designer, he will be responsible for designing and creating the product line.

Director of Product Design, Stephanie H. Smith, will maintain 10% of the business as her main contribution and initial business will only involve creative product design input and card greetings, versus’ and/or messages. Stephanie H. Smith is a Special Education Coordinator/Teacher at The Charter School of Excellence in Yonkers, N.Y. who graduated from New Paltz University, New Paltz, NY in December 2003 and is currently seeking her Masters in Educational Leadership at St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY. Stephanie has an excellent eye for grammar, writing and critical–thinking, as well as, excellent organizational and management skills. As a Special Education Coordinator/Teacher and working towards her Masters in Education Leadership, Stephanie has gained experience in leadership, team experience, which has helped to develop her organizational ability in order to maintain a sense of balance.

Handcrafted by LaMar has used the services of Accountant/CPA, The Tax Man - David Goldring, to file all taxes (sales and income). It will also hire the service of Teressa Smith to oversee its bookkeeping and/or financial records. Handcrafted by LaMar will hire legal assistance to help it transition from sole proprietor to Limited Liability Company and file proper documents for operating a business in the state of New York.
La-Mar and Stephanie will initially be the sole members and contributors of the design team. Handcrafted by LaMar will continually improve its product line, offering different variations of intricate and embellished designs, photographed and graphic pattern designs. Freelance sales reps, artist and writers will be hired as necessary, based upon the growth, development and expansion of the company and/or the need for additional inventory.

Well this week I started a monthly business journal...
I thought it better to keep me focused on what I need to and where I am trying to go with business for 2010. After a year at my full time job I have noticed that my Card business has taken a hit to its livelihood. I have always dreamt of starting and running my own business. Well I have done that for a little more then 2 years but the money was sooooo slow. I have found ways to stick with it but I tell its hard.

So anyway I started this journal to help get back on track and hopefully something will come of it all.

Formal Black & White Wedding Invite (first smpl)

This, my first of many to come, Wedding Invitation is 5x7" It starts out on black card stock. I think I did that because I wanted the card to have life... The white just seemed so plain, so I added black. I then went out and found this wonderful floral print that had groves in the image. I loved it and knew it was gonna look wonderful.

I then took my second most favorite thing to put on a card - RIBBON. I used a white grosgrain ribbon which was about 1" wide. I wrapped it around the length of the card then covered it with my pop-up affect. I say pop-up because its raised off the surface of the card a good 1/4" and no matter how much you push it pops right back up.

To finish it off I ordered these great handmade flowers from Meg of fortymeg.

The flowers were black and off white with clear rhinestones...

This was a great adventure, because the design process is the hard part, especially when you dont want to look like everyone else in town. Anyway, thanks for stopping by and home you have a smashing weekend.....

Brown & Blue Flower Wedding Invitation

This is my second Wedding Design. I used brown, a dark Chocolate brown card stock topped with a blue and white floral print...

**Sounds like I was cooking it right?!! LOL

I wanted to enhance the the print without being too obvious... I found a card stock to match the leafs in the design. I then added white for which played as part of the design and color coordination but also where the wedding info is placed.

I first wanted to leave as it was but then I decided to add a lace like bow ribbon at the top...

Questions to ask when business is in trouble...

Hows your cash flow? Is it dwindling profits or both?
Has the problem been fixed? Is it fixable? ie: If you marketing idea isn't working, have you dropped it and tried something different? Why not?
Is your industry going bad, making it hard to make a profit? Or is it your execution/plan, whether its pricing, cost of goods, location or venues where you sell your wares over saturated?
If this is fixable what will it cost? Will it be worth it to fix? How long would it take to be fixed?
Is quitting an option? If it is, what are consequences? Do you have loans outstanding? Will you lose your home? Will you have to file for bankruptcy? Will you have tons of raw material that could not be sold to help you see some type of return?
Would it be better for you to change your craft? What if you started on a new craft and carried the burden of designing 2 different crafts? ie: Maybe you are a jeweler...maybe start doing knit.
Do you still have the hunger you had when you first started? Do you still have the fight to go on?
Being strapped for cash and dealing with the obstacles of running a small business can wear you down...
Can you start all over with a fresh idea to improve what you already started?
Are you still having fun? Again do you have the passion that you had when you first started your business? In the beginning it wasn't just about the money it was thrill and knowing that you can do this have fun, enjoy yourself and then make money at the same time...

Just a few questions to think about as you restructure, grow and expand...

the Blackberry vs. the iPhone...

Heres a great read I found online about your cellphone. I personally have a Blackberry and love it. Yes it is very addictive, hence the name 'Crackberry', but its because its so easy to use and when running a business you need something that can serve as your assistant not a distraction like the iPhone and all the useless apps and gaming play (not that I would mind having on...LOL)

There are plenty of smartphones, but only two celebrities. Like other big celebs, they go by one name: Blackberry and iPhone.

Applications
Recently, a co-worker wrote an application for his Blackberry that would automatically ignore calls to his phone from a particular mail-order steak company. The application allowed him to command his phone to ignore any number he specified. The call still rang through, but was ignored immediately. I found this to be the most helpful application I’ve ever seen.
That said, I’ve not been impressed by the application selection the Blackberry offers. While there are some free applications, most are second rate at best and the selection of pay applications isn’t nearly as robust as it should be. The Blackberry App Store is like a pawn shop that only sells used 8-track players.

Application development on the iPhone has been one of the highlights of the device since its inception. Even though there are several hundred useless applications, there are hundreds more to make life easier in the palm of your hand. Like the Remote application that turns your iPhone into a stereo remote so you don’t have to leave the comfy confines of your easy chair.

I have to mention this comment from @tmoney941:
"Do you really need an application to help you decide where to eat, how much to tip, where you parked, and what to wear? I’ve got one of those … they’re called wives."

That’s pretty much my sentiment when it comes to most iPhone applications. That aside, due to the overwhelming availability of applications and the encouragement by Apple to design your own, iPhone takes this category by a wide margin. iPhone +1.

Physical Attributes
Early on, the iPhone had a bad reputation for being fragile because of the touchscreen face and slick feel. When dropped on the cement too many times, any phone would eventually break, but the iPhone proved that it actually is quite durable. As long as you don’t drop it on its face. Without anything protecting the glass, you are looking at a shattered iPhone.

The touchscreen and motion sensibility on the iPhone is unmatched by any other touchscreen devices. Bump to exchange contact information, play games by tilting the phone, zoom in with a finger slide motion. It’s simply amazing technology and even the touchscreen Blackberry Storm doesn’t come close. But you still wouldn’t want to drop an iPhone more than once.
Since I drop my cellphones a lot, I strolled over to talk to my IT friends about the durability of the Blackberry. They are about split even on which phone they carry. There are either Blackberry phones or iPhones in IT. They are not split on the durability however. Several of them have had to replace their iPhones due to cracked screens. Many of them have dropped their Blackberry over and over with some scratches on the casing. The worst I’ve heard about the damage to a Blackberry is the scratching it gets on the back if you spin it around on the table too many times. Which is just too much fun not to do.
Even if it gets run over by a truck the Blackberry still holds its form, avoids cracks and doesn’t lose a key. The Blackberry, built for business and travel, is a durable and strong phone. Blackberry takes this category. Blackberry + 1

Gaming
The iPhone makes full use of the motion sensor and touchscreen to bring us dynamic games from flight simulators to action games to simple board games. Playing games on the iPhone is a fantastic and handy experience, especially multiplayer games. Plus, as mentioned before, you can design your own games if you have the know-how.

No contest. iPhone + 1

Personal vs. Business Functionality
Companies run Blackberry server products. From the connectivity to Microsoft Exchange server and the ease of mobile e-mail, the Blackberry is far superior to the iPhone. Blackberry was created with business use in mind. While it may have a slower CPU, the Blackberry makes up for it with its office applications. There is a reason it’s nicknamed “the Crackberry.”

When it comes to security on the Blackberry, well, let’s just say it’s secure enough for President Obama to use. Official statement from Blackberry as to the security:

The BlackBerry® Enterprise Solution has been approved for storing and transmitting sensitive data by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as well as government organizations in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Austria, Australia and New Zealand.
The iPhone has more storage, a faster CPU and more RAM. All great attributes for playing games. As I’ve witnessed at work, the iPhone is the anti-productivity phone. Don’t pretend like you are holier than thou and don’t spend countless work hours downloading apps and playing the new Iron Man game or any of the thousand other games.

Recently, the iPhone became compatible with Exchange Server, which was a huge step toward integrating with business. The iPhone has made great strides in favor of business use. Many businesses are making the switch, however, there are still security concerns with the phone. It also doesn’t help the iPhone for business that it’s only available on AT&T in the United States. Companies like to price shop and AT&T’s service isn’t that great in all areas.

Apple is making strides in the security department, as all new iPhones come equipped with MobileMe, which allows you to find your lost iPhone as well as remotely wipe its memory clean.
As for personal usage, the Blackberry is a sturdy and reliable phone. But due to the wide range of applications and amazing graphical interface and selection of games, the iPhone wins the personal use battle by a wide margin.
So this category is a draw. Blackberry wins for business use and security, iPhone wins for personal use. Blackberry + 1, iPhone + 1

Never forget the Chuck Norris Factor.

Really, it all comes down to Chuck Norris, because if he doesn’t like it, he’ll roundhouse kick it out of existence. The Blackberry sports a great game simply called Chuck Norris: Bring on the Pain. Meanwhile, the Apple store rejected a Chuck Norris app, a Chuck Norris joke generator, because they claimed it ridiculed a public figure. Don’t they know that it’s impossible to ridicule Chuck Norris? More importantly, shunning Chuck Norris in whatever format is like challenging Superman to a duel by slapping him with Kyrptonite gloves. Or, it’s like slapping Chuck Norris in the face with your ungloved hand. This round clearly goes to the Blackberry as it’s probably what Chuck Norris is using. Blackberry + 1

The Winner? Final tally: iPhone +3, Blackberry + 3.
Listen, I carry a Blackberry. I’m not going for hip or trendy, I’m going for functionality. I want to be able to check my e-mail at stoplights. I want to be able to picture message without jumping through hoops. When it comes to functioning in the business world and having a practical phone, the Blackberry wins hands down. The iPhone is a fun phone and has a lot of cool features and applications. I really wanted an iPhone, but realized that it was a want. It’s a neat toy, but I can’t see it moving into the business world and becoming what the Blackberry is to business — yet. The best solution I’ve seen so far: Many Blackberry owners I know also have an iPod Touch for all their entertainment and portable gaming needs. So it’s a best of both worlds if you will. I’m sure that waffling answer won’t satisfy the masses.
The bottom line is, we’re geeks. Geeks like awesome tech toys and the iPhone is certainly that. From its gaming to its thousands of unique and specific applications, it’s a device that every geek wants to carry even if they already have a Blackberry. So the iPhone gets a +1 for geek factor and wins this debate.

Back to the Basics

Hello again...
I first want to apologize to all my faithful followers, readers, bloggers and friends who have read this blog, supported this blog and was to let me know I have fallen off...But like many of you I need advice and help to keep my Small Business afloat. So I did what I hope many of you do when after you've read one of my post, considered the facts and took some advice.
Yes, I took some of the advice I was preaching (cant wait to share that with you all) and most of all I took it 'BACK TO THE BASICS'...
BACK TO THE BASICS?!Yeah... I needed to go back to the day and time when I first decided to turn making cards into a business. I needed to find that young, fresh off the bench, ready to play game. I needed to re-define my target audience (still a work in progress). I needed to hone in more on my craft instead of just focusing on selling, marketing and showing off my 100 sales (was just doing the same thing over and over).

What I did first?
Like I said I looked deeper into who my audience was. I feel when it comes to handcrafted cards everyone should have one, buy one and/or get one. The truth of the matter was that that wasn't the case. I began to realize that I sold better to those who were throwing parties, doing events, weddings, baby showers, or restaurant owners. I know that sounds like a lot but it really isn't or at least it wasn't. I also took notice that few people bought cards in bulk. Those who did were of what I call my 'higher end' clientele.The next thing to do was to use all resources I could get my hands on. I had my future wife take cards to her job... Did Holiday Cards for her sisters job at a very low price (way low)... My mother took a look book to her job... Even got a few co-workers to buy cards (tons of them too...).The next thing was to redesign the look of the cards. Step outside the box. Use images I would never thought to use before and colors I would never.

What did this do in the long run?
Well I am not at a hundred thousand yet and its still just me at the controls...But it did help with my exposure.It got out there.It got me a few great returns buyers (YAY!).And most of all, it help keep the spirits up when it seemed as the economy was gonna ruin much of everything...Stay tune for the second part of "GETTING BACK TO BASICS"

I have struggled for a long with promoting and growing my business. As a small business owner there are many obstacles one must jump through in order to get to where he/her has in mind.

I always wanted to run my own business then turn around and help or assist others do the same as I have. For that matter I started a second blog, "Small Biz Talk" I think it took and took off in the right direction. Sadly though it did become bit more then I could handle, especially with my business growing, craft shows and selling on other venues online.

The end result here? Well I have decide to merge two blogs, bringing the business info I have gathered, learned and posted here to share with all of you. I have also decided to not too business consumed but to also share my self and life with you guys as well. I hope you enjoy the new blog and continue to support HANDCRAFTED ART around the world....

2 years in business and still growing...

I too have been with Etsy for 2 years (September 2007) I have learned sooooo much it was like going back to school...

I made goals and reached many of them:
last year said I wanted 100 sales and got it. Also said how I wish to get 500 hearts and got close before the end of the year. Now I am at 177 sales (working to get 200) and almost 700 hearts.

I thought I'd share are a few things I have learned and some things that I do that you might want to do too:

1. Ask and you will receive.
One day I asked myself why of all the other great card makers a buyer choose me . So I asked and got back such great info. I ask after the sale or when I informed the buyer the item was being shipped.

2. Start a mailing list.
Did this as well but only on my website and only have about 167 or so. Still working on it, trying to increase my following.

3. Blog, Twitter, Fan Page.
I have a blog... bad thing is I am the worse blogger because I do not always blog when and the way I should.
I tweet...just to keep up with the JONES....
Facebook? of course I do. I keep up with old friends and I do not do the separate personal and business page. I like to let people know I am human and think its ok to show that side. Though I have had a slip up here and there but my purpose is to let ppl know I am normal.

4. Always do your research.
This I found to be a must if this is a business to you. You need to check out your competition and changes in your material and new ideas...

5. Try out other venues.
This is very important. Look in the real world all businesses try new venues or states and or areas. I am apart of at least 5 other venues in which 2 have made me sales. The others keep in sight of the people. I also do craft shows.

6. Jump at your chances!
I have took many chances with consignment deals. I also work with artist in other states as to sending my work there and them sending their work to me. You have to take chances, thats almost the name of the game.

7. Never be satisfied.
Because you can always improve. Work on your techniques, your descriptions, your tags, your profile, and your photos! I'm always working on better ways to make things or how I can make something but be more time efficient.
Not much more to add to that....

8. Take time off.
Make sure you give yourself time away from your business. Take a day off and spend it with family, do something fun, cook up a storm, or whatever you enjoy. All work and no play makes for a dull life.

My Story...

"I started with the dream of being my own boss. Being in control. I never really wanted to be the face of the company though, so my idea was to use my talent and maybe sell it to a company of interest. But then I thought to myself "Am I in total control or am I still just a worker?" So I decided to take my poetic aspirations and artistic skill and make greeting cards. After completing a thorough investigative research, I realized I would need help to make a great break through into the card industry. A 7 billion dollar industry with a lot of competition!

I had my mind set that this was the key. I set up a website and bought a few images from an artist. At this time my cards were only prints. After a few months of trial and error, I realized that the lucrative aspect of this industry was in hand-made cards.

My first card was near and dear to my heart because I made it with the thought of my girlfriend (don't tell her though!). I never sold that card but, hey. My first year actually selling my cards was 2008 on ETSY.com. At the time I was unemployed, collecting unemployment, and trying my best to build this business. I spent hours upon hours on the computer, networking, blogging and chatting with like-minded people. At first, it was actually great, but life moves on, bills won't wait to be paid, and I didn't sell enough to cover my bills and keep going with my dream. So I went back to work.

This time my plan and goal was clear... I wanted to work, get my bills in order, put funds aside to carry the business and a little for myself for life expenses. My goal is to quit my day job within the next year. It's a tough market out there, but I feel many people don't realize how difficult it is to pursue your creative dreams full-time. I hope to create my own niche for marketing, which is making cards for all occasions with a 2 - 3D look, and passionately express the theme of each card."

I wanted to throw this post out there to the last card winners of this blog and to others who may or may not care. In the past few months I had a family tragedy. Most of craft was consumed in a fire, computer destroyed and life in total chaos...

I was recently contacted by SARA (hope I spelled that right) about the winnings, and though my small business is not as great as I wish, I am still a human being who has compassion and feelings. I say that to say this, I did not forget about the winners, I just had to put you to the side to regain what I lost and what I still have to work with. Yes there are post that appear on this blog as well as my other blog but many are because they are scheduled from past months...

the History of Valentine's Day and that start of the Valentine's Day Card...

Every February around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. Handmade valentine cards made of lace, ribbon, featuring cupid and hearts spread through America in 1850 by way of printer/artist Esther Howland, who was among the first to publish and sell Valentines in the USA.

So now the question remains, who is St Valentine?

The Catholic Church recognizes 3 different saints named Valentine or Valentinus. One was a priest in Rome, one a bishop in Terni, and the third Valentine, nothing much is known of except that he met his end in Africa. All three were martyred on February 14^th.

The most commonly know Valentine is that of St. Valentine who was imprisoned and fell in love with a girl, who is believed to be the his jailers daughter who visited him during his confinement. History has it the he wrote her a letter before his death which he signed, ‘From your Valentine’, an expression still used today.

Some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated mid-February to commemorate the anniversary of St. Valentine’s death, about 270 A.D. Ancient Rome considered February the official beginning of spring and considered it a time of purification. Roman priest would gather in a sacred cave where infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to be cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priest would sacrifice a goat for fertility and a dog for purification. The boys then ran around town gently slapping both women and crops with goat hide. Later the women would place their names in an urn and the city’s bachelors would choose a name from the urn and become paired for the year. These matches often ended in marriage.

Approximately 85% off all valentines are purchased by women. Valentine’s Day is also celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the UK, France and Australia. The oldest known Valentine Card is on display at the British Museum.

Moving On Up… To the East Side!

I am so siked right now. 2009 has, thus far, been good to me in so many different ways.
Though I have not jumped out of the roof with sales, I have made great ground coverage with exposure.

One day, as I always do, I was in the forum section of Etsy.com’s Business Topics. I found a thread where one seller had seen their sales rise due to a press release in their local newspaper. I was amazed by it personally, not because I don’t think that seller was worthy but because hey that’s FREE advertising! So I contacted that seller and asked for a little assistance on how my press release should be look, feel and sound. After a day I finally got mines down on paper. My next step was to find out who to send it to. When I called my local newspaper, The Journal News, I was shocked to get an email and phone call reply that said, “We are interested in doing a story piece on you and your cards, please let us know when you are available…”

You can image how shocked I was. I was siked…

Long story short I contacted them back and a few days later they were at my home and 2 after that I was in the ‘Life & Styles’ section of the paper plus had a small piece on their blog. I was totally happy with just that, even if nothing else happened this year. It’s not everyday a small-small business man gets a 2 page piece in the paper and not making a $100,000 a year. *That article brought in a few sales and an email from the local news station, News 12, editor/producer. Now that’s when I hit the roof, because I thought maybe the next I would be struck by lighting. I mean like so many goods things at one time…It was weird for me. They said they wanted to do a piece on me for Valentine’s Day. Of course I said heck yeah…Well the next week Tuesday, February 10 they came to my home and later that night I was on the 10 to 1030 pm slot, with a few other local shops but I was there and so were my cards. It was amazing and such a joy to know I was getting the exposure I so desperately needed and felt I deserved. *I have not gotten any orders from that yet but I am hopeful.

My point here is that no matter as long you try, be patient and work hard, things will happen. My new motto, which is old but I changed the meaning, is P.U.S.H. ‘Push Until Something Happens’ you have to keep pushing yourself and never quit on yourself, because if you quit on you then you can’t expect anyone else to stand by your side while you sit around feeling down and out.

Here you will fill in the information and in the message area you will enter the name of the card(s) you want and the your membership number, which will be giving to you 2 to 24 hours after you have completed the sign up process via email.

You can browse our online boutique and pick any 2 cards you want and you still get FREE PERSONALIZATION on both cards.

How are the cards shipped?

All Cards are shipped via U.S.P.S. First Class Mail, so it is important you select/pick your card allowing enough time for shipping. All our cards are packaged in cellophane plastic for protection with matching envelop and in clear plastic boxes for all card sets.

How will I be able to track my orders?

Tracking your order and status of membership will be done by our internal system which will email you each time your request for a card is received. You will receive an email updating you of how many cards you have left to order for the duration of your membership, how many you have already received, and shipping will be tracked with USPS mailing conformation tracking numbers. If there a problem were to occur you will be able to email us or contact us by phone during regular business hours 6 days a week.

when I came across the image of cupid shot by the very arrow he carries...
I had to laugh to tell the truth, and thats when that light bulb flashed on in my head.
I thought what a cool card this would be.
So I had to do it.

I really felt the need to share a bit of my craft's or industry history with you today.
Valentine's Day is coming soon, Saturday, February 14, 2009.

Tradition holds that the first Valentine was sent in 270 A.D. by St. Valentine on the eve of his execution for refusing to renounce Christianity. He sent a note to his jailers blind daughter for bringing him food and delivering messages during his incarceration, which he always signed "from your Valentine."

The Romans celebrated St Valentine's Day as the Feast of Lupercalia, dedicated to the pastoral god Lupercus and to the Goddess of LOVE, Juno.

The Christian Church denounced these 'love lotteries' as pagan rituals. During the Middle Ages love lotteries persisted in France as "chance boxes" that allotted couples one year to get married or part ways. In England, men wore the name of the woman/girl they drew on their sleeves encircled with a heart... Now we know where that tattoo came from...

Written Valentines appeared in the year 1400, often giving anonymously. By the 1700's the verse "roses are red, violets are blue..." became very popular and by the 1850's the French began to design their Valentines cards with glitter paper, ribbons, lace and other intricate embellishments... The first Valentines in America were exchanged during the Revolutionary days and were mostly handmade. In 1840, Miss Esther Howland, an imaginative artist and entrepreneur, became the first regular publisher of valentines in the United States, eventually heading her own publishing company that specialized in Valentine's Day Cards.

I enjoyed spending time with family and the so needed break from the nine to five and the crafting, but no matter what I couldn't get mind off the business... I have formulated a new plan for 2009. A plan to market my crafts in more places, create new designs, add more products and to start a gift guide/showcase plus so much more. I will start a Greesting Card Club called 'the Cards by LaMar Club' (CLC), a program called the Give a Card Program and more great ideas...

For 2009 mymain goal is to continue blogging and creating better handcrafted designs that will make you say wow...

Hey, has 2008 been good to you?
Have you been good to 2008?
Well if not then 2009 is the year to change it all.

This year I will start a Give Back Campaign!

First on the agenda is Refer a Friend:
Here what happens is when someone refers a friend and that friends buys 2 cards, you get 50% off any item in my boutique. If they buy the cards 1 at a time then you get 25% each time they buy a card. *(More Details to come when the year begins) This is called my Gold Friends Reward Deal.

Then I will also offer the Silver Friends Reward Deal, in which if you refer a friend to my boutique and they buy 1 card you get You get 1 card FREE (card must be of equal or lesser value). YES, totally FREE! FREE card, FREE shipping, FREE! *(More Details to come when the year begins)

Also this coming year I will begin a Give a Card Program (GCP).
This program was inspired by http://keikicards.org/ which I found by mistake one day researching the web. I read their mission and was so touched and wanted to be apart of it. Unfortunatley they closed shop before I can help make a difference. So this year I will start my own programme which I will donate cards every month and funds to select organizations and families. I will search these families from Social Services and churches. I will select families in true need. Families who have children and can not afford food everyday, clothing, toys, birthday parties etc... I will also like to gather donations, but will more likely take funds from each purchase to donate to hospitals and childrens homes, homeless, families and more.

My last pitch for 2009 is a focous group.
I would like to build a community of people who are willing and able to communicate on the products I create as well as the products of fellow artist. At the end of every session I will give away a FREE card or set of cards to no more then 5 people.

These are just a few ideas for the 2009 season!

It mentioned how big name companies improved products and sale through online focous groups to a clear picture of what the consumer was thinking. Naturally I thought, hey what a brillant idea and why aren't I doing that?

I read an interesting article yesterday on my way home from work in a magazine called; The Advertiser! It mentioned how big name companies improved products and sale through online focous groups (to learn more check out my other blog Your Small Biz Talk this week).

So I thought, hey what a brillant idea...

First and foremost remember this is just my thoughts, process and opinion. I stand by this post because I have done this for myself and have 120 sales (from January 2008 to date) and 498 hearts all from my Etsy Shop. An official website which has had over $100 in sales within 2 months (from craft show patrons), other offline sales which have totaled over $400, 3 successful craft shows under my belt and orders from people who have heard of my cards by word of mouth.

Becoming a successful seller is not a secret (although sometimes luck and good fortune can help) its tons of hard work. This in short is what I did to get this far:

1. I did tons of research before I made my first card. This was so I knew what I was getting into and the potential of the business/industry I was entering if everything went well.

2. I began crafting and designing my cards. Always using the opinions of friends and family like a focous group when it came to color, wording, design and style. It was important to know why the card worked and didnt work (why they liked it and/or did not like it).

3. Exposure-the first step. The only way to get noticed and seen. I searched for different online selling avenues and found one I felt was best for me and what I wanted to accomplish with this business.

4. Exposure-the next step. I told everyone I knew about my products, friends, family and even some strangers in my area (also known as: promote, promote, promote). I did the adword thingy with google and yahoo. I began blogging as you see and listed my cards on Craigs List, and a few other FREE classified advertising sites. I joined network groups like My Space, Facebook, Ning (there many different groups there to join), Flickr, Indiepublic...basically anywhere they would let me in, I got in. LOL.

5. I never made myself comfortable or satisfied with just a few designs. I kept trying to improve my product (cards/designs), pictures and overall appearance of my online boutique and business. If I felt one card had a good feel with the public, I tried to duplicate it with color, size and a new look and theme. As you would see in my boutiques many of my cards have a similar if not the same layout with different colors and/or embellishments.

6. I try to never be negative, because every pitfall has an up-side somewhere. If I am faced with a lack of sales, I immediately say I have to promote some more. I also use that time to hit the field (friends, family, shows and stores) to show them and remind them , 'Hey I have these great cards...dont you think you need one?' And now with my new boutique and the ability to do newsletters I try to reach old customers. A blog is not too bad either.

7. Finally...I always try to think business and act business. I believe if you think you can, one day you will. So whether its slow times or not I am always on the computer searching for new ways to get seen: New selling ports. Consignment deals. How to get into local stores? Whats new out there? What are people looking for (color, design, themes)? What new type of embellishments can I use? I am always working and thinking of how to get to the next level. I never sit around...

Some people have products/ideas that may out shine yours but if you want it and work hard for it you can have what they have or get to where they are. Nothing just happens overnnight.

Also enjoy what you do, because if you dont no one enjoy it for you!

This is more a vent then anything else, but I promise not to drag it along...

I am a 31 year old male who lives with his 2 year old child and mother (the child's mother). I have always had this idea of being rich, but then again I guess we all did when we were kids. Long story short I got into the fashion industry and when I thought I was gonna bust out and take over I was fired...So for a whole year I was unemployed and at that moment decided I will try my hand at running an online business. I found a place where I can sell my hand made cards (ETSY.com), stay home, enjoy my sons growing pains (LOL) and make a little money all at the same time.

Now thing here is that my sons mother knew the plan when I was fired. She knew I was not going to look for a new job so I can try to get this business dream off the ground. With unemployment sending me a small and meaningless check each week, my cards online, I needed very little financially. But as time grew she became more a monster. Complaining all the time that, shes tired and shes this and shes that. Now don't get me wrong I understood because I had a full time job and worked long and hard, but doesn't a man deserve some time too? I mean I have a very energetic 1 and half year old running 'round the house like crazy, bathe him and get him to bed. Why cant I get the night to do my craft?

Well flash forward to present time...
After a year of being home and hearing her nagging in my ear I decided it was time to go back to work. The business didn't take off the way I hoped! So now I am working again which is great because after a 3 month dry spell of no sales money got tight and its hard to fund a business with hopes and dreams. So I got a part-time job which is cool because ultimately it gave me time to still craft and now my son, 2 years old, goes to a Early Head Start Program.

OK so now my days are like;
Wake up 730am get child dressed and out by 8 am.
830 to 1030 am I network, post, adjust, blog and maybe craft a little before leaving for work.
Noon to 4 pm I am at work, networking, researching and blogging.

But all that glitters is far from gold because once again the ugly beast has shown her face.
"O I am so tired." "I feel sick..." "I this..." "I that..." "can you take him?"
All this time I am wondering what about me. I mean yeah you work 9 to 5 and I only 12 to 4 but hey I get tired, I feel sick, I want some peace of mind too, but I put it on the back burner so I can try this business thing and make something better for us in the future.

All I am saying is a MAN is hard to find now a days!
But a GOOD CRAFTSMEN is even harder to find!
